The commission recommended consolidating logistics to ensure consistent broadcast quality on the city's public access channel. Local advocates note the decision aligns with the 2025 municipal budget line item of $87,000 earmarked for election programming.
Residents who work at the Riverside paper plant or the hospital on the east side will need to travel across the river for in-person attendance. A Ward 3 challenger who previously drew 180 local voters to a neighborhood forum in 2022 now shares a single downtown stage with five other candidates. Policy analysts say the format favors incumbents who already appear in routine city council coverage.
Budget figures and expected schedule
The election commission report recorded that 42 percent of debate attendees in the last cycle lived within two miles of whichever venue was used that night. Under the new plan, all six forums will be held on consecutive Tuesdays beginning August 11. Ballots for early voting will be mailed to registered voters starting September 15, according to the city clerk's office.
Next, the public access channel will air 30-minute recorded segments of each forum the week after the live event. Candidates who cannot secure one of the limited live audience tickets may submit written statements for the broadcast. The city clerk's office will accept those statements through July 31.
