Equipment is another consideration. Most Augusta programs lend gear for tryouts, shoes, shin guards, helmets, but players who make the team are usually expected to provide their own essentials by the first official practice. Soccer cleats can run between $60 and $150 at the Dick's Sporting Goods on Washington Road. Volleyball knee pads cost roughly $30 to $70. Cross-country athletes need a good pair of running shoes; local running stores such as Fleet Feet Augusta offer student discounts of 10 percent through September.
Transportation to off-campus practices and games can be a barrier. Augusta University runs a shuttle from the Summerville campus to the Christenberry Fieldhouse on Wrightsboro Road, but club teams that practice at the Riverfront sports complex on Reynolds Street are not on a regular shuttle route. Rideshare costs from the main campus to the riverfront average about $12 each way, according to recent student surveys.
