Aquinas High School Athletes Prepare for Competitive Fall, Winter, Spring Seasons
The Fightin' Irish programs draw broad local participation while preparing teams across fall, winter and spring schedules.
How we reported this
Aquinas High School fields teams in more than 15 sports this year, with more than 90 percent of its students taking part in athletics or other activities.
The level of involvement stands out in Augusta because it pulls in players, families and supporters from across the community rather than limiting opportunities to a smaller group of specialists. Parents and siblings regularly attend events, creating a consistent crowd at home and away contests throughout the year.
Facilities upgrades at the school, including a renovated gymnasium and updated fields, support daily training for football, volleyball, basketball, soccer, track and other squads listed on the athletics schedule. These resources remain available to the wider student body even when they are not rostered on a team.
Championship Record and Seasonal Offerings
Since 2018 the school has captured five state titles in girls soccer, discus, cross country, shotgun trap shooting and men’s basketball. The programs compete as members of the Georgia High School Association and the Georgia Independent Athletic Association, with separate fall, winter and spring lineups that include clay target, swimming, golf, tennis and sailing alongside the more traditional team sports.
Coaches stress time management and sportsmanship in addition to game results, selecting one athlete per team each year for a Virtue Award based on conduct with teammates, opponents and officials. The approach aims to build habits that carry into college classrooms and later jobs.
College Placement for Local Graduates
More than 50 Aquinas athletes from the past decade have continued playing at the next level, reaching programs such as the University of Georgia, Georgia Southern, Virginia Tech, Wofford College, the Air Force Academy and the Naval Academy. Recruiters note the combination of on-field performance and classroom preparation when they visit campus.
With summer training underway, families can contact the school at (706) 736-5516 or through the admissions page to arrange a tour timed around upcoming practices or scrimmages. The athletics overview on the Aquinas site lists every sport and provides current schedules for the coming months.
